If you break down on a Dutch motorway, switch on your hazard lights, get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency lay-by if you can, and wait behind the crash barrier. Where there is a peak-hour lane, there is no hard shoulder while that lane is open, so aim for the next lay-by or exit. To tell us where you are, read the nearest hectometre marker: the small post shows the road number and the distance, often with a letter for the carriageway. Or simply share your live location on WhatsApp. If your car blocks traffic, a Rijkswaterstaat road inspector or the police may have it moved; we then collect it from wherever it was taken. In a tunnel, follow the instructions and use the emergency exits if there is danger. In town, in a car park or on an industrial estate, we load the car onto our flatbed and drive it to a garage, your home or abroad.
