Getting your car home from Iceland
Anyone taking their own car to Iceland uses the ferry from Denmark, which arrives at Seyðisfjörður in the east. A broken-down car goes back the same way: by road to the port, by ferry to Denmark and then through Germany to the Netherlands. Sailings are not daily, so we time the collection around the departures. On the island, the Ring Road (Route 1) circles the country and many other roads are unpaved. The F-roads in the highlands are for four-wheel-drive vehicles only and closed for much of the year. If you break down, switch on your hazard lights, get the car as far off the road as you can and call 112 if you are in danger. For immediate help on the spot, call a local recovery service first; we then collect the car from the garage or yard where it stands.
